CHEA Announces Major Database Expansion

(Washington DC, April 29, 2005) The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) announces a significant expansion of its database of accredited institutions to now include accredited programs. Effective April 29, 2005, information about more than 7,000 institutions and 17,000 programs is available to students, families, educators and the public.

Launched in 2002 and expanded in 2005, the CHEA Database of Institutions and Programs Accredited by Recognized United States Accrediting Organizations is a major public service, providing the largest and most comprehensive Web-based listing of accredited institutions and p

Users of the database can easily find whether an institution or program is accredited, the organization that has awarded the accreditation, and where the institution or program is located. For more detailed information, links to all institutions, programs and accrediting organizations are provided as well.

"Knowing the accredited status of an institution or program and whether or not the organization doing the accreditation is recognized is valuable to students, families and the public seeking reliable information about quality higher education institutions and programs," according to CHEA President Judith Eaton. Attending an institution or program accredited by a recognized organization is vital to students when seeking financial support for college, pursuing transfer of credit or planning to sit for licensure examinations in a range of professions.

Located in Washington, DC, CHEA is an institutional membership organization of approximately 3,000 degree-granting colleges and universities and provides national coordination of institutional and specialized accreditation. CHEA currently recognizes 60 institutional and programmatic accrediting organizations.
