How to Borrow DVD's and Videos

The materials listed in our catalog are provided as a service of the N.C. Department of Labor. The library's audiovisual collection consists of approximately 600 titles. These materials cover a wide variety of subjects reflecting the diversity of occupations in North Carolina and are geared to maintain North Carolina's high occupational safety and health standards.

Who can borrow audiovisuals?
The N.C. Department of Labor Library lends videos and DVDs to registered patrons in North Carolina. We do not sell any materials; however, vendor information is available upon request.

Is there a charge?
Borrowers agree to pay return shipping for materials borrowed. Otherwise, the service is free of charge.

How do I request material?
To request a video, contact the library by calling 919-807-2848 or by email at dol.library@labor.nc.gov. If the material you request is checked out, you may want to request another title or request that we place a hold on the unavailable title so that we can contact you when it becomes available. We recommend that you contact the library about one week before you need the material. Audiovisuals are sent out on a first-come, first-serve basis via U.S. Mail.

Library patrons must complete, sign and return a Library Loan Agreement to the library before checking out any material. In order to expedite your request, you may also fax a signed copy of the agreement to 919-807-2849, but you will also need to mail or deliver the original copy to the library.

Please see the agreement for additional instructions on returning a completed copy.

How long may I keep materials?
You may check out up to five titles at a time, for a period of three weeks. A due date will be on the audiovisual case with return address. Please be sure to return materials promptly, because someone else may be waiting for them.

Items are renewable for a three-week period, provided that no one else has requested them. Please call the library at 919-807-2850 if you wish to renew!

Information the library needs from you to borrow materials:

  • contact person's name
  • institution name
  • address for shipment via US mail
  • phone number

May I visit the library?
If you are in the Raleigh area and would like to come to the library to check out materials, you are welcome to do so. We are located on the fifth floor of the Old Revenue Building at the corner of Hillsborough and Salisbury streets. However, for your convenience, we recommend that you call the library first to ensure that the materials you want are available and to be sure the staff will be there to assist you. Regular library hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Visitors are welcome.

What if I lose or damage library materials?
The person who checks out the video is responsible for its return. These videos generally cost $300-$500 each, so please return materials promptly and by insured mail. If a video is lost or not returned, the borrower will be billed for its replacement.

May I duplicate materials?
Most of the materials in the Labor Department collection are under copyright and therefore cannot be copied.

How do I return materials?
When returning materials by mail, please pack them in STURDY containers, so that they are not damaged en route. Also, to ensure that materials are returned to the library, please return materials BY INSURED MAIL to:
