Special Star Team Member Program Begins

The N.C. Department of Labor conducted its first Special Star Team Member (SSTM) training on March 16 and 17, 2009, in Winston-Salem. Another session was held March 19 and 20, 2009, in Raleigh.

The SSTM training is for participants and consultants associated with the Carolina Star Program. The SSTM Program is North Carolina’s version of federal OSHA’s Special Government Employee (SGE) Program. The SSTM Program allows industry employees and qualified consultants the opportunity to work together in partnership with the NCDOL Carolina Star Program during onsite Star Program evaluations.

Not only will this volunteer program benefit the Labor Department by supplementing its onsite evaluation teams, but it will also give industry and North Carolina’s state government an opportunity to collaborate and share ideas and perspectives.

The SSTM Program is a state and federal pilot program that will be monitored by both state and federal officials. The first two SSTM training sessions had 39 participants. Each participant successfully completed the course work and was recognized as a qualified SSTM. As the Carolina Star Program continues to grow, managing these programs and maintaining a high standard of excellence will become challenging. Therefore, the commitment and participation of our Star participants in the SSTM Program are essential to the future success of the Carolina Star Program.
