The primary responsibility of the Research and Policy Division is to collect information and data use by the labor commissioner. The division helps to establish and revise policy guidelines and assists all other divisions and bureaus in the department. The division also develops and implements special programs and projects.

The Safety and Health Survey Section collects, reviews, refines and publishes injury and illness survey data for certification by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The data are used by the U.S. Department of Labor to provide work-related injury and illness rates and demographic and case characteristics data on U.S. employees. The section conducts the BLS-sponsored Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) and the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII)
