Joint
State-Federal Wage and Hour Seminars
Co-Sponsor Requirements
The
North Carolina Department of Labor and United States Department of Labor
are joining forces in order to present joint state-federal wage and hour
seminars throughout the state. These seminars are all-day from 8:30 am to
4:30 pm with lunch being provided. The topics include state and federal
labor law coverage, employer-employee relationship, minimum wage (including
tipped employees), time and one-half overtime pay (including exemptions),
promised wages including wage benefits, hours worked, child labor/youth
employment (including hazardous/detrimental/prohibited occupations and work
permits), the Family and Medical Leave Act, and various other employment
laws. We will be emphasizing the new federal minimum wage and overtime pay
"white-collar" exemption rules, which the state has also adopted.
(919) >The North Carolina Department of Labor is charging a
registration fee of $50 per participant to cover light refreshments in the
morning and afternoon, lunch, and a wage and hour reference notebook for
each participant. Light refreshments are normally coffee, juice, danish
or doughnuts in the morning and soft drinks, water, cookies in the afternoon.
Lunch can be as simple as a box lunch or sandwiches, or it can be a full
meal such as a buffet. We are required to have a minimum of 20 participants
in order for us to conduct these joint state-federal wage and hour seminars.
If your organization wants to co-sponsor a seminar, then your organization
must provide a meeting room and make arrangements for the refreshments and
lunch. If your organization provides the refreshments and/or lunch, we will
then reimburse your organization at a reasonable cost. If you get a caterer
or restaurant to provide the refreshments and/or lunch, then you can have
them bill us directly. However, we must first come to an agreement as to
what the reasonable cost is going to be for the meeting room, refreshments
and lunch all-together. We prefer that the co-sponsor provide the meeting
room at no cost to the department, but this all depends on the total cost
of everything combined.
We prefer
that all of the registration of participants to be done through our Web
site to prevent duplication. However, if people
do register with your organization, then you must keep a detailed list
of these participants and you must collect the registration fee up-front
and
send to us. If you allow people to show up and register at the door, then
you must have someone available to do this as we may have only the two
speakers
there. And you need to have your designated person coordinate with the
program assistant assigned to your seminar as to how many total people
have registered
so we can make sure we have enough notebooks for everyone. The program
assistants in charge of the seminars are Shannon Council and Dawn Beasley.
